Just wanted to leave y'all with a lil' something...

Hey everyone!

So, as I was online searching for some information online, I came across a great quote on leadership. It spoke so much to me that I decided to devote a whole post to it. No fancy italics here, just straight truth. Here is the awesome quote:

"There go the people.
I must follow them for I am their leader."
-Alexandre Ledru-Rollin

This quote really speaks to me because often times people don't embrace that you have to be a follower to be an effective leader. What does this quote say to you? Sound off below.

Happy Tuesday Y'all!

At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.

~Jean Houston

Hey everyone!

With the holiday season in full swing, things can start to get pretty stressful really quickly (especially when you are completing graduate school applications *sigh*). So this morning I was surfing the net looking for a quick pick-me-up when I came across the most ADORABLE video ever! This brought me soooo much joy that I decided to share the video with you all! Take a look and prepare to smile:

Hope this video brought smiles and a little laughter to your day!

New Protective Style: Yarn Twists

"You have the funkiest, most unique hair in the world. Own it."
~Knottyandnice.org

Hey y'all!

I've decided to do some protective styling for the winter. So after lots of research (procrastinating from other things, lol!), I chose yarn twists. I was so excited that I decided to do a video on them. Check it out below:

*Reflections*--> Don't Gossip...Just Pray!

"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."  ~1 Timothy 2:1-4

Hey everyone!

In this video, I talk about the importance of praying for people instead of our natural reaction of gossiping about their situation. We are all sinners and all fall short of the Glory of God! Thank God for GRACE though!! Instead of bringing down others, we need to take the time to pray and help those in need of God's help. Hopefully this video touches and
ministers to someone's situation. Check out the video below:

Peace & Blessings!

It's the First Day of School!!!

"Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow."
 ~Anthony J. D'Angelo

Ahhh...it's that time of the year again...the time when school buses start driving down your neighborhood streets to pick up eager school kids... I'm really excited because today is the first day of school for Detroit Public Schools and surrounding areas! I'm really excited to start working with kids again this year and hopefully plant a seed in at least one child that education is important and can be fun!

For the teachers out there, be strong!

Be blessed!

Learning to Trust in God Series

Hey everyone!

It's been a while! I have really been doing some reflecting on my life and my purpose here on Earth...so I've been away for a while. I decided to do a series of 3 videos about this journey that I have been going through. I was and will continue to be completely transparent in this journey, allowing you all to see some parts of me that I used to hide. My hope is that my testimony will minister to someone who watches it. I'm no longer afraid of backlash, rejection or judgement by anyone that is on this Earth so please feel free to comment and write whatever you like in the comment box! I'll post the three videos below!

Enjoy!

30 Day Blog Post Challenge: Day 3

Question 3: A book you love?

I have been reading a lot more lately, but there is one author that sticks out more than the rest, JOHN GRISHAM. Every single one of his books that I read are page-turners. I often found myself reading instead of doing other "important" things, lol! One of the novels that sticks out the most is his 1996 best-seller "The Runaway Jury". Normally, I'm not a big fan of law fiction, but the storylines are so interesting, you can't help but to read. I'm purposely not talking about the book's contents so that you all can take the opportunity to read his work. I will say this, the book starts off very interestingly and keeps the reader engaged the entire time. I love this book because it kept me guessing the whole time (and most times my guesses were wrong, lol!) Take the opportunity to read this book and many others from his collection. Please feel free to comment about whatever you read on this blog.

Be blessed!

Weight Loss Journey: Week 2 Results!

"Any experience can be transformed into something of value. Everything depends on the way you look at things. You cannot have the success without the failures."
~Unknown Author

Hey everyone!

I know this is late, but I finally got around to posting my measurements for the end of week 2. Just for the record, I did measure myself on Sunday...I just didn't have time to take a video or anything else. :( This week will only have a blog post dedicated to it, because I am kind of short on time.
Here are the results from Week 2:

Weight:
Wk 1: 193 lbs. |  Wk 2: 194 lbs.
Bust:
Wk 1: 42 3/8 in. | Wk 2: 42 2/8 in.
Waist:
Wk 1: 37 6/8 in. | Wk 2: 36 in.
Hips:
Wk 1: 43 3/8 in.  | Wk 2: 43 1/8 in.
Thighs:
Wk 1: 24 in. |  Wk 2: 23 4/8 in.
Biceps:
Wk 1: 11 3/8 in.  |  Wk 2: 11 6/8 in.

I have to say that some of the measurements came out a little bit funky. I do know that I did quite a bit of cheating on my caloric intake during this week. This was probably the cause of the extra pound that I gained. I also skipped the 30 Day Shred workout for a couple of days (after you miss one of the days, your body really feels the loss of endurance when you pick it back up).

My hope is that this will be a wake-up call for me and I will start to eat healthier.

Stay blessed,
nNb :)

30 Day Blog Post Challenge: Day 2

Question #2: Something you feel strongly about?

Hmmm...this one is a very easy one. I feel that every child in the United States should have equal access to good education. There is a big difference between the quality of education in a suburban district compared to that of an inner-city district. Students in urban areas are way more likely to dropout of school because they do not value education. Most of these "would-be dropouts" see local drug dealers making more money than everyone else in the community. What's worse is that several educated people grew up in these neighborhoods but they don't often return. This causes kids to label them as "fake", "bougie", etc. Since they see the drug dealers "servicing" the community that they were raised in, kids are more apt to emulate them.

I encounter students everyday that would rather listen to the newest rap song than listen to the history of their own race. Students value rappers over educators. Example: You hear a student rapping some lyrics to a popular song. You decide to print out these lyrics and give them to the student to read (Student doesn't know the origin of the foreign poetry on the page). You then ask them to read the "poetry" aloud.  I did this once with one of my students. Not only did they have difficulty reading the "poetry", they also called the whole thing stupid. Once I told him that I found a rap version of the song, he instantly wanted me to play it. He was embarrassed when he found out that it was his favorite song. Why is it that our students can memorize rap lyrics on a dime, but have difficulty reading simple sentences?! If they could only learn to harness that energy and apply it more towards their education, there is no telling what they can accomplish!

In order to increase the total number of high school graduates from the inner-city, we first have to get the community involved. There are too many times where I see parents smoking and drinking with their children. The community needs to step up and nurture their children. We need to give these kids something positive to look up too, instead of rappers, drug dealers and video vixens.

Yes, I know that this was a lot to write for this post, but I feel very strongly about education and its reform. :)

Peace,
nNb :)

30 Day Blog Post Challenge: Day 1

Question 1: Five ways to win my heart?

1.) Have a strong relationship with God
This is important to me because I am also yearning for a stronger     relationship with Jesus. There are sooo many things that God has done for me that I take for granted each day. Having a strong foundation in faith is very important to me. My belief is that Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for each and everyone of us and we all should spend time praising Him for being who He is. I also believe that we are saved by GRACE not by WORKS! A man that shares these beliefs with me has taken a GIANT first step towards winning my heart :)

2.) Passion for uplifting urban youth
Most people that know me know that I am very passionate about education. I grew up in Detroit, where the public school system barely produces many students that can read at their grade level. I feel that every child deserves a chance at a great education. A man that not only believes this, but tries to help fix the problem will win some major points in my book.

3.) Educated man
Not much to say here...there is nothing sexier than having an intellectual conversation with an educated man...

4.) People who like to laugh
I love to laugh, in fact I do it ALL the time. I am very silly and I love to have fun. People that laugh a lot are usually very positive and fun to be around. They are also usually very charismatic and charming, definitely a plus ;)

and last but certainly not least...

5.) Guys that like jazz/neo soul/smooth r&b music
I love these genres of music. Instead of doing the typical movie date, I love to go to jazz clubs. I find the music to be wayyyyy more uplifting that the things I hear on the radio. I also love the smooth melodies that make you want to get up and dance!

Satisfying the Economical Fashionista in YOU!

"A girl should always be two things: classy and fabulous."
~Coco Chanel

Hey lovelies!

As summer draws nearer, people are starting to replace the sweaters with summer tops. As I start to configure my summer wardrobe, I want to make sure that I get the most bang for my buck. In order to do this, I decided to check out some online sources for designer fashions. I came across a few websites:
599fashion.com and  15dollarfashion.com. Both of these websites carry very nice, good quality clothing at VERY affordable prices.

Ok, so the first thing that you might think is that the websites might be kinda sketch if they are selling clothes for that cheap. I had this same thought too, so I looked up YouTube reviews to make sure that the sites were legit. You can see one of my favorite review videos for 599fashion here: http://youtu.be/LVfUToVMa3I
Make sure you all check out the websites and look at YouTube for more reviews on both of the websites. As soon as I order from the sites, I will post a review about my experience.

Happy shopping fashionistas,

Healthy Meal Challenge

5/26/2011 Breakfast: Whole Wheat Bread,
Orange Slices & 3 Scrambled Eggs
When it comes to eating right and exercising, there is no "I'll start tomorrow."  Tomorrow is disease.
~Terri Guillemets

Hey everyone!

I hope everyone is having a spectacular week! This post was inspired by a post that I saw on (now, one of my favorite weight loss websites) www.myfitnesspal.com. One of the members was challeged by his friends and coworkers. The challenge was that healthy meals can't be filling and satisfying while still being low in calories. He decided to start a forum post about the subject, and began posting pictures of his meals on the site as well as the corresponding caloric content. After seeing some of his meals, I got inspired! I have been griping internally, wondering when I would get tired of eating the Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine meals. "Running out of food to eat" was one of my biggest problems that contributed to my failed attempts at weight loss. It was then that I realized that in order for this attempt at my LIFESTYLE CHANGE to be effective, I have to figure out ways to spice up my meals.

First and foremost, I will look up great recipes online for healthy meals (that don't have to be microwaved) and cook more food at home. My goal is to try to post pictures of some of the meals that I am eating online. This will help me get out of the "food rut" that I am currently in :) In addition to looking up great recipes, I will also be posting my feeble attempts at making them on the blog. I'm looking forward to this great new opportunity in front of me. Any support or comments (as well recipes) will be greatly appreciated...

Chao loves!

*Music Review* --> Musiq Soulchild's "Musiqinthemagiq"

"Time waits for nothing, no one and everything"
 ~Musiq Soulchild

Hey everyone!

Musiq Soulchild's newest album "Musicinthemagic" dropped recently on May 5th. I just got the opportunity to listen to it this week, and I have to say that this is some of his best work yet! Usually, there are only a few key songs that I like on ANY album that I hear, but Mr. Soulchild outdid himself this time! I love every single track on his new album! His songs display a very positive message about love, and commitment (as normal) as well as gives listener a catchy tune to jam with. He had a nice balance of slow and fast paced songs on the album, for an overall WIN! I won't go into too much detail about the tracks, because my explanations will not do them justice. I will say this though, my favorite track on the album is "Silver and Gold". Take a listen here:

Weight Loss Journey: Week 1 Results!

"Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.” ~Buddha
 Hey everyone!

I'm excited to say that I made a whole week in my weight loss journey! My diligence has paid off and this week's set of measurements proves it. This past week, I have made it a point (or at least tried...lol!) to do some sort of exercise everyday. The first exercise video that I attempted was Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. That video was (and still is) particularly challenging to me. After the first day, my thighs and lower body ached and burned for a
few days. After the first workout, I became afraid and started to avoid doing the "Shred" and tried to find other ways to work out. Needless to say, the "Shred: video gave me the best AND most thorough workout of my life! For this reason, I have decided to dedicate 30 Days to doing the "Shred". Please pray for me y'all, lol! As for this week's measurements, I do have some very exciting news:
I LOST WEIGHT and INCHES IN EVERY ATTRIBUTE!
Here are my Week 1 Results:
Weight:
Wk 0: 198 lbs. |  Wk 1: 193 lbs.
Bust:
Wk 0: 42 4/8 in. | Wk 1: 42 3/8 in.
Waist:
Wk 0: 38 in. | Wk 1: 37 6/8 in.
Hips:
Wk 0: 43 6/8 in.  | Wk 1: 43 3/8 in.
Thighs:
Wk 0: 26 in. |  Wk 1: 24 in.
Biceps:
Wk 0: 12 4/8 in.  |  Wk 1: 11 3/8 in.

Last but not least, I made a video basically restating some of the things I said earlier. This video also contains a tutorial on measuring body parts. I show y'all step-by-step how I will be measuring myself during this journey. Check out the video below (Don't forget to rate, comment & subscribe):

Online Weight Loss Comminuities

"My advice is to go into something and stay with it until you like it. You can't like it until you obtain expertise in that work. And once you are an expert, it's a pleasure."

~Milton Garland

Hey lovelies,

So, you all know that I am currently in a middle of a weight loss journey. This is my THIRD attempt at doing this and I want to make sure that this time, I am successful. One of my goals during this journey was to find some online weight loss communities that are supportive as well as informative. I am happy to say that I have found some really good ones. These communities, not only allow you to track your exercise progress, butt hey also allow you to examine your nutrition as well. They contain a wealth of information, and I am ready to absorb it all!

MyFitnessPal has a really great phone application that allows you to instantly track, input, and sync your nutritional changes as the day progresses. Their food database is very extensive, and I haven't come across one thing, yet, it did not have.

CurlyNikkiForums Health & Fitness contain a wealth of information from naturals that are trying to become more healthy and fit. They talk about supplements, exercises, challenges and much more! CurlyNikki also has a great phone application so you can access the forum at anytime! :)

FatSecret is a great webiste to check out a detailed list of all types of foods. They not only gave me the standard nutiritional information, but they gave me much much more! They also have a great online journal so that people can follow and track your progress.

These are just a few of the online communities that I have come across that encompass everything that I am looking for! Hopefully you can check them out and join them as well! Don't forget to add me as a friend on all of these communities, my username is naturalNaijabeauty for all of them!

Official Weight loss Week 0 Measurements!

"Money is the most envied, but the least enjoyed. Health is the most enjoyed, but the least envied."
~Charles Caleb Colton

Hey everyone!

I started my official weight loss journey yesterday and I am still super excited! In order for this journey to be successful, I am not only going to weigh myself each week, but I'm also going to be recording measurements for other parts of my body. This is so that I don't get discouraged when I look at the scale 2 weeks in a row and see the same weight. Looking at the change in the rest of my body measurements will help make me feel so much better. I took the my initial measurements yesterday. Here they are:

Weight: 198 lbs.
Bust: 42.5 in
Biceps: 12.5 in
Waist: 38.0 in
Hips: 43.75
Thighs: 26.0 in

I plan on measuring myself at the end of each week and I will be posting my progress on this blog as well as other weight loss communities. Stay tuned for more details/developments!

Stay blessed!

Measurements for Weightloss Journey...

Hello beauties!

So, as you all know, I am starting my weightloss journey today. Each week I will video taping or blogging the following measuments:

  • Weight

  • Waist

  • Hips

  • Thighs

  • Bust

  • Arms

This will allow me to keep an accurate account of all of my weight loss. There will be some weeks that I won't see a weight loss change but I will see a decrease in another measurement. I will be measuring myself today and recording all of these measurements on the blog. I'm super excited to start this journey and I hope that I can motivate others to begin taking control of their health.

New Exercise Journey!!!

It is exercise alone that supports the spirits, and keeps the mind in vigor.

~Marcus Tullius Cicero

Hey everyone!

I'm come to you all with great joy in my heart! I'm finally going to start my exercise regimen! I picked up a membership at a popular gym about 2 months ago, hoping that I would be motivated enough to start my workouts. The only thing that I was able to do was allow my membership card to collect dust.

The recent boost of motivation for me came from an incident that occurred last weekend at my cousin's graduation party. I took a picture with my cousins in a row, and afterwards, when I saw the picture, I was saddened. I felt like I looked very large and super wide in comparison to the rest of the women. Now, I'm not saying that being large is a bad thing, but I started to feel very insecure after seeing the picture. I carried the feeling of sadness for most of the evening. I remembered dressing myself before the event and feeling SUPER cute, and I almost started to tear up. I couldn't really figure out why I was feeling that way.

Fast forward to the yesterday, those feelings of sadness resurfaced after I saw the picture again. After some thought I determined that the only way that I will be able to remove those feelings of sadness is if I begin taking better care of my health. So, I am going to blow the dust off my gym membership card and start on the track to good health. Although my goal is to lose weight and no longer be considered obese, I also want to make sure that I start eating better and drinking more water. One of the things that I have fallen into a bad habit of doing in drinking more juice (or kool-aid) than water. Those things are filled with sugar and all it does is make me wayyyy more sluggish.

Now, you might be saying, "Michelle, haven't you tried to do this in the past? What will you do this time to make sure that your motivation doesn't fade?" I'm proud to say that I have also been thinking about correcting past failures. It doesn't matter how much you pay for a gym membership, if you don't go to the gym, then you are just waisting your money. Below are some of the things that I want to do to keep myself motivated:

  1. Post about my weight loss progress each week

  2. Continue visting exercise forums and websites to keep getting more tips

  3. GO TO THE GYM!!!! or find another place to workout if money gets tight

  4. Post the types of healthy food alternatives that I am consuming

  5. Post my workout regimen

  6. Drink 1/2 my body weight in water

  7. Learn to have fun while working out!

  8. Join an online workout community where I can post my results to keep myself committed

My hope is this time my exercise journey will be a success and can be documented so that the world can also see. If you have any tips or pearls of wisdom that you think might be helpful, please feel free to share.

Be blessed,

nNb :)

It's been a while...

Hey y'all!

It's been a while sinnce my last official post so I just wanted to let everyone know that I've got some great ideas in the works. I'm also going to be starting up another edition of the 10-week weekly challenge to uplift someone. Also, I'm going to be making so big decisions about my natural hair in the next coming weeks (don't worry, it won't involve relaxer but it may involve a possible BC) and I will keep you all posted on those developments.

I will be back in action soon y'all!

The Climate of DPS Schools...

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.” --Charles R. Swindell

DISCLAIMER: THIS BLOG POST IS NOT AFFLIATED IN ANY WAY WITH CITY YEAR DETROIT. THIS IS SIMPLY ME STATING MY OWN OPINIONS/OBSERVATIONS.

Hey everyone!

Today I was talking to some of my 9th graders about a college night event that my City Year team is in the process of planning. As I was asking about registration forms, one student said "No one in here is going to go to college anyway...". That comment bugged me...not only did the student make the assumption that no one in the class wanted to go to college, he also said (indirectly) that no one in the class will be able to make it into college. People, I ask this simple question:
When did we get here as a community?
Why is it that students are more willing to fight/kill one another over practically nothing?Students spend more time writing their "hood" on the walls of the school than they do writing a ONE paragraph response to an instructor posed question. If you ask a student to recite their favorite rapper's lyrics, they can drop a rhyme on a dime. However, if you ask those same students to READ those same lyrics aloud, the have so much difficulty. Girls are willingly allowing boys to use and abuse them, while at the same time, calling these little boys "boo" or "baby". Even worse, is that these same guys, who were scum to begin with, impregnate these girls and then don't want to help raise the children. We've got babies on the block selling rocks to support their ENTIRE family!
What is going on here people?!?! Have we lost so much love for our commuity that we have let it turn to shambles?! Looking at pictures of my old Detroit neighborhood in the 70s, the area was thriving! The high school (where I am currently placed for my service term) looked beautiful. The neighborhood looked beautiful. what has happened between then and now? Our streets are covered in trash and litter. There are more abandoned buildings on some blocks than there are actual filled homes! Our children walk through the neighborhood and see nothing but struggle and strife. Most of them think that the only way to make money is to sell drugs. The sad part about it is that most of the affluent people in the neighborhood ARE the drug dealers. Those who get out of the neighborhood tend not to come back because they want to escape.
The only way that Detroit can become the thriving city that it once was, is if all the neighborhoods come together as one. We need to stop all of these rivalries and EDUCATE our children!!!! The community is a major influence on the path that students end up. The community sometimes lends itself to be a success deterrant. Our students can do anything that they set their mind to, and we need to instill that idea into them. We need to stop worrying about the superficial and worry more about their FUTURE! It is truly the only way to save our kids...
Stay blessed,
nNb :)

Nubian Twists!!!!

Now that the damage was gone, my entire head felt different from how it ever had before. It was soft and shiny, even directly after shampooing. The curls were firm and confident. I’d never experienced this creature before, and I began suddenly and fiercely protective of these fresh curls unfurling from my head like new fronds on a fern.
~Terri LaFlesh from the book Curly Like Me

Hey lovelies!

It's about that time again where the weather is starting to get unpredictable (at least in Michigan) and I'm just getting supppper lazy and don't want to do my hair. To alleviate this problem, I am going to get......(drumroll please...)

NUBIAN TWISTS!!!!!

I like this style because it is cute and sassy! It's low maintainence and it can be styled in soooo many ways! I ordered my hair from Eon Hair on Monday and I got it today (I opted for the 2 day air mail b/c I was super impatient, lol!). It's a bit on the pricey side, $11.99 for one pack, but all the videos that I have seen on YouTube says that the hair is great quality. According to reviews, the hair is springy, light and soft. I'm really excited to see how the style turns out.

Just so you all know, I plan on doing the style myself. The last time that I braided my hair myself, it turned out pretty well :

This style didn't really have a name, I just bought some Marley Braid hair and started twisting, lol! (The original plan was to do kinky twists...but the hair was too thick...) Hopefully, I will be able to make a tutorial video of myself doing the nubian twists so that everyone can see my technique. I'm very excited and I can't wait to share my results with you all!!

peace -n- love,

*Reflections* --> Dealing with Pessimism

"Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power"
~William James

Hey y'all!

First and foremost, I want to wish everyone a happy hump day! I know that things can get rough, but remember that the energy that you give off is contagious...

We all know the story...someone that you know woke up this morning in a funky mood. Everything that happens to them causes them to more upset and negative...whether the event was positive or negative. Everyone that they encounter senses that negativity coming from that person and the mood in every room that they enter begins to sour. Negative or Pessimistic people cause evreyone around them to change in attitude and disposition.

I try to be a positive as I possibly can, but sometimes pessimistic people cause me to turn from my naturally bubbly self, into a ball of saddness and negativity. I struggle a lot with dealing with neagtive people on the job, at home with family and even with some friends. The important thing to remember is that negativity is infectious! What we must do is remove ourselves from being around people who are always negative and sad. Don't get me wrong, don't completely abandon the person(s), you are to be a good friend and try your best to help the person get over (or at least cope) with their sadness. The problem starts when the person you are trying to help chooses to remain in their sad state. When they refuse to see the good in any situation and decide to wallow in their own sadness, that is when you need to escape.

I'll be honest, I used to have VERY LOW self-esteem. I used to be the person that wallowed in my own self pity. I constantly turned to my friends and wanted them to pay attention to me and try to make me feel better. I used to like the attention, because I felt like people liked me. After a while, my friends started to get tired of me being in a constant state of negativity. People stopped calling and checking up on and hanging out with me... It wasn't until a little while afterwards, that I realized that people don't want to hang out with super negative people. Sometimes people want to hang out with you and have fun. If they constantly come around you and you are negative and pessimistic, they too will become that way. After that learning experience, I now know how my friends felt as they dealt with my pessimism.

It's very important to be supportive, but remember there is a difference between occasionally being someone's shoulder to cry on and being a permanent crutch. In order to reduce your own stress and frustration, remove yourself from the footholds of negativity and pesimissim. Try your best to be the most positive person you can be and trust in God to heal your heart and those around you who may also be on the fast track to Pessimism City.

with love,
